Dress-up, Circa 1983

Circa 1983…strutting around the house in an eclectic mix of papa’s cowboy hats + winter down vests when I wasn’t dripping in mom’s pearls amongst other vintage treasures. A little tomboy turned fashionista. A fashionista destined for a career in the arts, yet somehow taking a different path all together…

Twelve months ago, it was time for drastic change. There is something to be said when you tell people what you do for a living and they laugh. Every time. It was not the reaction that bothered me, it was that I agreed. Every time. A long overdue risk, a freeing decision. The beginning of Midwest Couture…a vital creative outlet while in career transition. A year of the most difficult and heartbreaking decisions. A year of self-discovery and amazing opportunities bringing me to this very moment. No regrets. A celebration.

Thank you to my family for always embracing my creativity – actually relieved to see me returning to the arts vs. analytics. Thank you to my friends for your support, your encouragement and your praise. And thank you to my social media family…how you inspire.

Calm

The calm before the storm:

Thunder in the distance. Still air. A changing sky. Nothing quite like summer storms on the lake…observing it all around me. Love. A ferry horn off in the distance mixed with angry bouts of thunder. Final boarding call + last chance to reconsider. Steady raindrops with lightning against pale gray. Still the gale…reminiscent of lake-effect, has not arrived. Then, marine advisory + windsheer reports begin to pour in. Exhilarating. Where are my wellies?

Summertime

Hermes Vinyard. Photo by Trasi.

Hermes Vinyard. Photo by Trasi.

Seeking refuge from the humidity and heat, I spent an afternoon revisiting the garden at Hermes Winery…a Midwestern staple, a place to think, drink, and relax. Cool shade under a grape-vine cloaked pavilion. A glass of Chardonnay. Fallen wild blackberries resting on top a rustic, wooden flatbed…little, inspiring traces of summertime. A scenic vineyard just steps away. Tranquility.

I first experienced Hermes during early April, just before the official move to New York. The vineyard, once bare in harvest stage, is now thriving. Their garden is in full bloom, burnt-orange day lilies among others blowing lightly in the warm breeze.

Please read the back history of this amazing winery. A former East-coaster with Midwestern roots and a dream to plant a vineyard someday. A dream that brought him back to a small city on the lake. I arrived in New York City with a dream…ironically leading me back to my roots as well. The first visit to Hermes was to say goodbye. A second visit to say, “hello we meet again”. Fitting…this marked the very day I received an opportunity worth returning for. My dream. Now a reality.

Brooklyn Bridge. Photo by Trasi.

It is like a tug-of-war…moments where New York pulls at my heart, beckons my return…and the next, the Midwest steals it away…

Since April, I had been living life as a New Yorker. Only two months…yet long enough to adapt. Discover. Become hungry for more. The city captures your heart while steadily testing your patience…volatile moments of exhilaration bound with a constant need to push forward. I opened myself to the experience…inhale + exhale, taking in each new day. New York was good to me…

Bryant Park Hotel. Photo by Trasi.

The transition back to the Midwest this week proves difficult to capture with words… Since returning, it has been a mixture of variant thoughts and emotions. As a means of conveying this adventure, it is best I share photography captured from my last weekend in New York accompanied by the randomness of past and present reflections.

Bryant Park…how I sometimes spent a lazy weekend afternoon in NYC. Submersed in fashion magazine heaven, cappuccino in hand and a Le Pain Quotidien chocolate croissant nearby…gazing up towards the magnificent Bryant Park Hotel every few minutes. Steps away from luxury.

Brooklyn Bridge Park…I could live here. The calm one cannot find in Midtown Manhattan. Quaint gas lamps, a garden in bloom…an instant reminder of a little sanctuary tucked away back in the Midwest I know all too well. Except for the bridge, now this proves challenging for comparison.

Brooklyn Bridge Park. Photo by Trasi.

Upon returning to Columbus…walked my former brick road neighborhood, visiting that very sanctuary, in 5″ Jimmy Choo’s, remembering every path of least resistance. A woman walking by me laughed, saying, “stilettos in German Village don’t exactly mix.” Years of practice + lessons learned ending in broken heels…trust me, I know what I’m doing.

Disconnected. Shock. Lost. Those were my initial feelings…not what I had anticipated. Standing outside my favorite Starbucks in a daze, wearing a black Theory business dress, Yigal Azrouel corset belt, and skyscraper Choo’s, thinking, smiling…there I go sticking out again in Columbus. Contemplating…why am I drinking Starbucks? Isn’t there an Aromas off 3rd…oh, a different 3rd St.

Brooklyn Bridge. Photo by Trasi.

Just moments after a brief rainfall Sunday afternoon, the sky clearing, I felt compelled to shoot additional photos of the Brooklyn Bridge…springtime thunderstorms on my mind. Missing the lake-effect weather. Fascinating. Invigorating. Home.

Visiting the lake on Tuesday…incredibly tranquil, calm. Slight chill in the air. Overcast. Rain beginning to fall. Inspirational for compiling thoughts + emotions. Writing. Also excellent napping weather.

I left New York to continue chasing my passion…ironically, leading me back to the Midwest. A rare opportunity of a lifetime has presented itself. Taking another risk with no regrets. Exactly where I should be right now.

During the cab ride exiting Manhattan…time to fly, goodbye New York. You have made a considerable impression in a short amount of time. I’m leaving you a more humbled, poised and wiser woman…hungry and inspired to keep the dream alive. Inhale + exhale.

Bouillabaisse please.

Bouillabaisse. Photo and dish by private chef, Charlie Romo.

This dish brings me back to my childhood…growing up on the lake, endless summers exploring the local islands, learning to sail, and mum’s gourmet cooking. A truly influential time in my life, elements which have made me the woman I am today…a period of time initially taken for granted prior to experiencing New York as a resident.

The big city has an extraordinary gift of raw inspiration… To create. Experiment with personal style. Learn a new language. To be proud and humbled by your own heritage. Over the past couple fleeting months, I have rediscovered so much of myself via the culture, the amazing people encountered, the fashion, and…the food.

Bouillabaisse. Photo and dish by private chef, Charlie Romo.

Bouillabaisse. Photo and dish by private chef, Charlie Romo.

This incredible dish evolved via twitter conversation with Charlie Romo, an uber-talented private chef hailing from Texas…follow him at @Moonglow1980. The magic key word combination presented my fellow photography + fashion-lover friend an opportunity to create a dish for entry into an image contest with intellectual property producer and publisher, Glitterati Inc. Fusing some of my favorite ingredients, Charlie’s presentation could not have been any more perfect…bouillabaisse!

~ in Charlie’s words…

Bouillabaisse Lite Recipe:

Firstly, a Bouillabaisse is a French fish stew that originated in Marseille. This not a traditional take on it by far but I used elements I personally enjoy. Also, I excluded shrimp and lobster from the recipe to focus primarily on the flavors of the mussels & clams.

Ingredients:

1 lb. Littleneck Clams, 1 lb. Chilean Mussels, 2 3-4 oz. filets Orange Roughy, 2 3-4 oz. filets Halibut, 4-6 fresh, cleaned whole squid, bodies sliced in rounds, with tentacles (for garnish), 1/2 cup celery, diced, 1/2 cup red onion, diced, 1/2 cup fennel, diced, 1/2 cup diced tomato, 2-3 tbsp. minced garlic, 2-3 good pinches of cumin, 1-2 bay leaves, 1 tsp. fresh thyme, 1/3 cup good extra virgin olive oil, 1 cup seafood stock, Pinch good saffron (if unavailable, use Mexican Azafran), 4 oz cup organic tomato sauce, Sea Salt to taste, Grains of Paradise to taste (if unavailable, Freshly Ground Black Pepper will suffice), Sprinkle of Herbes de Provonce (Optional), & Sprinkle of Herbes de Provonce (Optional).

Preparation:

Heat olive oil in pot or large sauce pan over low heat. (On the side, have a skillet heating slowly. Keep on low till 5 minutes before the Halibut step). Add diced onion, celery, fennel, tomatoes (and any stray tomato juice from dicing), garlic and cover immediately.. Uncover after 3-4 minutes. When you see condensation droplets, that’s the sweat you want. Add salt to allow vegetables to release moisture, as well as Grains of Paradise (or pepper if unavailable), cumin, saffron (or azafran if unavailable), thyme and bay leaves. This delicate process we’re orchestrating is like a seasoning infusion.

Cover to allow steam and precipitation to create a broth. Keep heat low and allow this process to work for an additional 5-6 minutes. Uncover and stir to assure there is no to minimal browning. Then, recover for an additional 2 minutes to ensure a good sweat has been had. Uncover and Incorporate seafood stock & tomato sauce. Cover and let simmer for 10 minutes. Uncover and strain liquid. Discard or reserve solids for whatever you want to use them for. Up to you. For this particular recipe, we are creating a broth sans solids other than the seafood. Return liquid to sauce pan or pot. Add Orange Roughy and poach 6-8 minutes covered. Uncover and add squid. Poach an additional 2-4 minutes for a total of 2-4 minutes for the squid, 10-12 minutes for the fish. When done, remove fish and squid and cover with aluminum foil to stay warm. Add mussels and clams and cover. Do not disturb for about 8-10 minutes.

*WHILE THIS IS WORKING, TIME TO SEAR OUR HALIBUT*

Bring additional (hopefully) cast iron skillet up to med-high heat. You know it’s hot enough when you sprinkle water at it and the water beads off very fast and vanishes. This is essential because, if your skillet is not hot enough, your fish will stick. Must allow the protein to hit a hot surface and sear. No fat is necessary in the skillet when you sear. (No oil, butter, lard, etc). (Optionally, you can saute the Halibut in a fat for 3-5 minutes on each side if you are more comfortable with said cooking method).

When skillet is hot enough, season Halibut with sea salt, Grains of Paradise (or pepper) and Herbes de Provonce, (optional. There’s lavender in HdP which some people may find assertive). Sear each side 3-5 minutes. When done, set aside under aluminum foil to keep warm.

*BACK TO OUR SHELLFISH*

When you uncover, all mussels and clams should be open. Discard any unopened ones as those have gone bad and may get you plague-sick. Time to plate! Ladel broth and shellfish in bowl. Wedge Orange Roughy in as best you can. Sprinkle squid. Wedge tentacles around, attractively. Top w/ seared Halibut and serve with crusty bread, (warm or toasty tortillas work, too!) & lemon wedges. Garnish with parsley.

Serves 1-2. Increase ingredients according to how many you’ll be serving. Feel free to swap in various fishes and shellfishes to suit your tastes. This is a homely recipe where components are at your discretion. Technique and timing should be the focus in practicing this recipe.

Thank you Charlie for allowing me to collaborate with you on deciding this dish. Your passion and talent I find inspiring…in your words, “art that we can eat.”

City inspiration.

Brooklyn Bridge. Photo by Trasi.

Fashion…style is more than labels, trends or subject to what celebrities are wearing at any given moment. For me, fashion has always been and shall remain about inspiration…acquired by not only what I discover in my favorite shopping destinations, publications, or in street-style, but within my environment specifically. Texture. Movement. Tone. Lighting…elements influencing my personal style.

Everyone has, or should have their little sanctuaries…those places you go to get away. Think. Breathe. Reflect. Derive inspiration. The Brooklyn Bridge captures me, mysterious and gothic…I could gaze at it all day.
